HISTORY

Swanny Yellow: A favorite of miners

Around 1848〜

The roots of GRIPSWANY gloves lie in the buffalo leather gloves worn by American workers in the 19th century.
We then continued to make improvements, using cowhide (steerhide) and designing it to fit comfortably in the hand.

The distinctive yellow color of GRIPSWANY gloves is called Swany Yellow. It is said that the idea of dyeing gloves yellow came about because there was little lighting at the time, so they would be easier to find if lost.

The relentless pursuit of strength

1970〜

In the 1970s, workers were troubled by fraying of gloves. Originally, glove sewing threads were decided to be natural fibers, silk threads, and cotton threads. In the 1950s, chemical fibers such as nylon, which is more resistant to weathering and aging than natural fibers, were already invented, but compared to the strength of leather, it was still weak and had fatal defects, especially against friction and heat.

Then DuPont developed KEVLAR®, a magical fiber that is heat-resistant up to 800 degrees Fahrenheit (about 427 degrees Celsius), and GRIPSWANY used this thread to sew their gloves, which has succeeded in dramatically reducing fraying compared to previous gloves. In addition, they also introduced an aftercare service that provides free repairs if the thread frays. *The free glove repair service continues to this day.

Landing in Japan

1983〜

When GRIPSWANY was released in Japan in 1983, it was immediately received enthusiastically by some outdoor enthusiasts. However, the following problems came to light when used by Japanese people:

One reason was that the fingertips and thumbs did not fit Japanese people due to the difference in bone structure between Caucasians and Japanese people, and the other was that the tanning process of the leather was too hard for Japanese people and it took a long time for them to become accustomed to the hand.

Authentic gloves in Japan

1985〜

In the 1980s, GRIPSWANY was released in Japan and was enthusiastically supported by some outdoor enthusiasts. However, when used by Japanese people, the following problems came to light. One was that the fingertips and thumbs did not fit Japanese people due to the difference in bone structure between Caucasian and Japanese people. Another was that the tanning of the leather was too hard for Japanese people and it took a long time for them to become accustomed to the hand.

After that, GRIPSWANY, a full-fledged outdoor glove, began to be produced domestically. The cut was adjusted to fit the Japanese skeletal structure, and the leather was finished softly, resulting in the creation of the finest outdoor work gloves. GRIPSWANY is a high-quality, genuine, authentic glove that has survived the test of time.

Spreading the GRIP SWANY spirit from Japan

2008〜

In 2008, camping wear was born to accompany GRIPSWANY gloves.

In particular, we have developed work pants, camping pants, gear pants, fire ponchos, and fire jackets equipped with GRIPSWANY's original design big pockets that can hold gloves used for camping and bonfires, and have been able to create a new category of bonfire campwear. We at GRIPSWANY will continue to propose outdoor styles that are unique to GRIPSWANY.
